Class Read Aloud: “Rules” by Cynthia Lord
Being an Active Reader: If you are reading then you are thinking!
We worked on tracking characters and ideas about those characters. We tracked Catherine in our class read aloud “Rules”. We created a chart about Catherine’s thoughts and actions and what those thoughts and actions tell us about Catherine. After we tracked Catherine for a couple chapters we realized that there were ideas and traits that kept coming up. We picked one idea to track by finding evidence from the text to support this idea. Take a look at Catherine's character chart and the idea that we are tracking below.
The students did this character work in their independent reading books. After about the first 30 pages of a book you should have enough information on a character to come up with an idea or trait to track and find evidence for.
