Word Study:
This week we are beginning a word study routine that will continue throughout the rest of this school year. This word study program is called "Words Their Way," and it's based on spelling and vocabulary. Spelling is a developmental process, so some of your children are studying vowel patterns associated with particular sounds, like short a and long a, while other children are focusing on parts of words that influence the meaning, for example the prefixes pre- and post-. The groups were formed based on a pretest that was previously taken.
A list of words is introduced on Monday that have particular patterns, the students do activities with the words Monday - Thursday, and they take a spelling test on Friday. Only 10 of the words are tested, not all of them, since the purpose is for students to understand a pattern.
